Firstly, you need to update your Wattbike Hub app with the latest version, then install the Beta firmware which will enable dual channel Bluetooth. To learn how to do this, click here.
Once you have the firmware installed on your Wattbike, you can now connect two devices/apps to your Wattbike Atom (Next Generation) simultaneously.
The order you connect to the Wattbike Atom is important
- The 1st app/device you connect to the Atom will act as the ‘Secondary’/’Passive’ app/device - it will not have any control over the bike and will just passively receive the bike’s data
- The 2nd app/device you connect to the Atom will act as the ‘Primary’/’Controlling’ app/device - it will have control over the bike as well as receiving the bike’s data
For example:
- Device A (Zwift) connects to Atom first. Device B (Wattbike Hub) connects to Atom second. Device B (Wattbike Hub) is in control.
- Device B (Wattbike Hub) connects to Atom first. Device A (Zwift) connects to Atom second. Device A (Zwift) is in control.
Here are some examples of how you can use the dual channel BLE
Riding a Wattbike Hub workout, using Zwift for scenery (and XP!)
- Turn on the Atom
- Start your Zwift session on device A. Connect Zwift to your Atom as controllable, power & cadence. Begin a free ride session, pedal to check the data is coming through to Zwift
- Start your Wattbike Hub session. Choose your workout. Connect to the Atom. Begin the Hub workout.
If you use erg mode in the Hub workout, the Atom will automatically adjust resistance to match the workout target in the Hub. In Zwift, the power will simply be sent from the bike to Zwift and therefore change your avatars speed.
You can switch between gear and ergo mode in the Hub as usual.
Riding a Wattbike Hub workout, using Rouvy for scenery (and career coins!)
- Turn on the Atom
- Start your Rouvy session on device A. Connect Rouvy to your Atom as controllable, power & cadence. Begin a 'Just Ride’ or ‘Time Trial’ session in Rouvy, pedal to check the data is coming through to Rouvy
- Start your Wattbike Hub session. Choose your workout. Connect to the Atom. Begin the Hub workout. The Hub app will be in control of the bike.
If you use erg mode in the Hub workout, the Atom will automatically adjust resistance to match the workout target in the Hub. In Rouvy, the power will simply be sent from the bike to Rouvy and therefore change your avatars speed.
You can switch between gear and ergo mode in the Hub as usual.
Riding a TrainerRoad workout, using Wattbike Hub for Pedalling Technique Insights
- Turn on the Atom
- Start your Wattbike Hub session on device A. Start a Quick Ride on the Hub and select your Atom. Switch to erg mode and begin pedalling to check the data is coming through to the Hub
- Start your TrainerRoad session. Choose your workout. Connect to the Atom. Begin the TrainerRoad workout. TrainerRoad will be in control of the bike and will adjust the resistance to hit the workout power target.
The Hub will receive your power and cadence data so you can use Polar View and PES to monitor your technique while you complete the workout.
Switching to gear mode won’t work because TrainerRoad expects to use ergo mode.
Things to be aware of
- You won’t be able to launch a workout in both connected apps – they can’t both be in control, and this will likely cause miscommunication and unexpected behaviour from the bike
- Be aware of 3rd party apps such as Zwift, and the Wattbike Hub app, reconnecting automatically to your bike. If apps reconnect automatically, it could mean you are unsure which app is in control. To be certain, completely close all apps, before opening them and connecting to the bike in the correct order – open and connect the secondary/passive app first, then once your connected, open and connect the primary/controlling app last
- If you are unsure which app is in control or there seems to be a miscommunication, close both apps and turn the Atom off and back on to ensure any previous connections are closed, before connecting in the correct order
Providing your feedback
The dual channel BLE is in beta so we can check if anything needs to be optimised before we move it into the stable firmware. While we’ve tested across combinations of the Hub with the most popular 3rd party apps among Wattbikers – we haven’t been able to test every 3rd party app on the market.
We’d love to hear your feedback - please complete our short survey.
